Locate Federal Prison Releases

To find someone released from the Federal Bureau of Prisons after a Columbia County federal matter, first confirm that BOP was the custody system. The county prison can temporarily house federal prisoners, but it is not a BOP institution. A sentenced federal person may later appear in the nationwide locator, while a pretrial person held for the U.S. Marshals may not. The federal release result can show departure from BOP custody, yet it does not resolve supervised release, Pennsylvania custody, or an immigration hold.

Federal Releases Serving Columbia

No BOP institution is located in Columbia County. The county prison says it houses federal prisoners, which can mean temporary local confinement connected to a federal court or U.S. Marshals custody. That local confinement role does not turn the prison into a federal prison and does not create a BOP locator record for every person held there.

A federal defendant may leave Iron Street for a BOP institution after sentencing, transfer elsewhere under Marshals control, or leave under a federal court order. A completed BOP term is a different event. Route the inquiry by legal custodian and stage, then describe only that system's result.

Custody scope: Leaving Columbia County Prison can be a transfer into federal custody, not release from confinement.

Read Federal Release Results

The locator's columns support a focused federal custody statement. They do not prove the outcome of a county case or every obligation after prison. Preserve BOP's literal field labels and compare the register number before connecting a result to a Columbia County docket.

BOP fieldHow to read it
Name and register numberPrimary link to the correct federal record.
Age, race, and sexDisplayed identity aids, not a substitute for the register number.
Release DateA past date can document departure; a future date is projected.
Location: RELEASEDThe person is no longer in BOP custody.
IN TRANSITMovement within federal custody, not release evidence.
UNKNOWNThe term has not been determined in the public result.

A past release date with Location shown as RELEASED supports the narrow statement that the person left BOP custody. It does not mean all supervision ended or that the person entered the community. BOP itself distinguishes release to the community from release into another jurisdiction.

Federal Locator Search Form

The official BOP locator form separates number and name searches, reflecting the different strength of those inputs.

The register-number route reduces false matches. After opening a result, the Release Date and Location fields supply the relevant federal-custody status.

Columbia Federal Custody Distinction

Columbia County Prison is both a pretrial jail and county-sentence prison, and it also holds federal prisoners. A federal person at the county facility may be under a court's custody order and managed by the U.S. Marshals before conviction or delivery to BOP. Searching BOP too early can return no result even though local confinement is real.

For the Iron Street event, call the prison at 570-784-4815 or Records at 570-389-5718 and ask whether the person left to a federal receiving authority. Then inspect the federal docket for the custody or release order. If the person was sentenced and delivered to BOP, search again after intake data is processed. Do not convert a temporary no-result into a claim of release.

USMS Federal Custody Records

The U.S. Marshals Service has no public name-based released-prisoner locator. It holds federal prisoners from a court custody order until acquittal or release, or through conviction and delivery to BOP. Its internal tracking records are controlled agency records, not a public roster.

Use the relevant federal court docket or clerk for the judicial order. When an agency record is needed, a focused USMS FOIA request may seek an existing processing or disposition record. The USMS prisoner-custody description explains the agency's role. A federal docket is strongest for the court's authority; an agency movement record is strongest for the actual transfer.

Federal Release Versus Transfer

The word “released” changes meaning across custody systems. Columbia County may record release to the Marshals because county custody ended. BOP may later show IN TRANSIT because federal confinement continues. At sentence completion, BOP may show RELEASED, while a federal judgment still imposes supervised release or another agency receives the person.

A still-confined person appears in the current system after its public update. A person released from BOP may remain visible with a past date. Neither condition proves the status of an unrelated state or immigration matter.

Obtain Federal Release Records

For a BOP sentence, begin with the locator result and the federal criminal docket. The judgment identifies the sentence and any term of supervised release, which is court-ordered oversight after prison. When a certified or more detailed record is required, route the request to the federal agency or court that created it. Columbia County's Right-to-Know process applies to county records, not BOP or USMS records.

For the local movement from Columbia County Prison, request the county's existing commitment-and-release or movement record. Ask for the date/time, release code, and receiving agency. For federal custody after that point, use BOP's record channels or federal FOIA as appropriate. This boundary prevents a county “release” entry from being presented as the end of a federal sentence. For a county-custody event rather than a federal sentence, use the Columbia County released inmate search.

Verify Columbia Federal Identity

Federal names can vary between the court docket, county booking, and BOP record. Compare the federal register number or docket number first, plus another lawful identifier. A common name match is inconclusive. Never join two records merely because the age is close.

Register number
BOP's person-specific federal identifier and the best locator input.
Supervised release
Court-ordered federal oversight after prison; it is not BOP incarceration.
Final discharge
Completion of the relevant custody or supervision obligation, not just transfer from one facility.
Detainer
A hold or notice from another authority that can affect where a person goes next.

Accurate confirmation states the scope: “The BOP locator lists Location as Released and a past Release Date.” Add that other jurisdiction custody or supervision is not resolved unless those records were checked.

Federal Court Release Evidence

The federal criminal docket supplies context that the locator cannot. A judgment identifies the prison term and may impose supervised release after confinement. A later order can change custody, sentence, or release conditions. Compare the federal docket number with the county movement record and BOP register number before treating the documents as one person's chain.

A judge's order is strongest for legal authority, but it may precede the actual handoff or gate event. BOP's public update may follow later. Preserve those dates separately. When the Columbia County Prison record says the person went to USMS, the federal docket and Marshals record bridge the gap until BOP intake appears. When the docket orders release, check whether any state or immigration hold changed the destination.

PACER or the relevant federal clerk is the court-record channel. Neither Pennsylvania's UJS portal nor the county RTKL officer maintains federal judgments. This division prevents a state or county no-result from being mistaken for federal discharge.
